About the Kansas Personal Finance Challenge

The Personal Finance Challenge is an engaging competition for students learning about personal finance in the classroom. Working as individuals and on teams, students will be tested on their knowledge of facts and terms relating to finances. Spending & Credit, Saving & Investing, and Income & Money Management are the topics for each round. High scoring teams from the preliminary rounds will be invited to compete at the in-person state competition in the spring.

The Personal Finance Challenge is open to middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students.

Teachers may register multiple teams of 3-5 students per team.


Competition Schedule

The Kansas Personal Finance Challenge will begin with a preliminary online test which must be completed during a two-week testing window. Teams of 3-5 students will participate in either the high school or middle school division.

Preliminary Online Testing - March 21 to April 4, 2012 (date extended0

Each student on your team individually completes a 30-question test. 
All team members must complete the test within 3 hours.

Test Results are kept confidential
Only teams invited to in-person competitions will be published.

An unlimited number of teams may participate in the online competition.  Teachers may reconstitute teams if invited to state competition.


Top teams from the preliminary rounds will move on to the in-person State Competition held in Wichita on April 18, 2012. These competitions will determine the Kansas State Personal Finance Challenge champions for both middle and high school divisions.  High school division winners advance to Nationals.  No National competition for middle school at this time.

April 18, 2012 (Wednesday) - In-person State Competition

for top online high school and middle school teams

Lunch and prizes will be provided.

Travel/Sub stipends may be requested & granted based on budgetary needs.
A maximum of two teams per school will be invited to advance to the state competition. Each school will be able to select which members of its qualifying teams will compete at state.


State Champions for the high school division advance to Nationals.

May 13-14, 2012 (Sunday/Monday) - National Competition

for High School division only

St. Louis, MO at the Headquarters for Wells Fargo Advisors

Nationals will only allow 4 team players to advance - food, transportation and lodging will be provided for 4 team members and 1 coach.
