Kansas Celebrates 30 Years!

This year marks 30 successful years of using the Stock Market Game in Kansas.  Kansas was one of the 1st states to adopt the Stock Market Game in 1977.  The SMG Program was coordinated through our KSU Center for Economic Education for many years before moving it to the Kansas Council on Economic Education offices in 2000.

To kick off the 30th year we celebrated with a Tribute Dinner in Topeka.  We had a great time and enjoyed the company of several special guests.  Dorothy Soldan, prior Stock Market Game Coordinator and KSU Center director, had just moved back from Maryland and was able to join us.  Many of you got your start in the SMG with the help of Dorothy and we wouldn’t have such a strong program without her dedication.  We are happy to have her back in Kansas!  Lisa Donnini was another of our very special guests.  Lisa was the past KCEE President and she is now Vice President of the Foundation for Investor Education, the organization that administers The Stock Market Game Program and InvestWrite.

Several of our wonderful teachers were also on our agenda along with a few past SMG students.  The event was a success thanks to these teachers and students!

  • Susan Raby, Jay Schidler Elementary - Topeka
  • Mirla Coleman, Norton High School – Norton
  • Frances Lucas, Bishop Ward High SchoolKansas City

Please look at our Tribute Dinner Program online.  Pictures will be available online next week.

SMG Makes KC Star Headlines

Text Box: Mark Davis, Business Editor with the Kansas City Star, wrote a wonderful article about the Stock Market Game Program in Sunday’s newspaper.  Mark has experienced the SMG himself and after hearing about the 30th birthday decided to help encourage schools to participate.

New SMG Advisor’s Companion

You will find this new resource in the Teacher Support Center’s purple section under Publications.  The purpose of the SMG Advisor’s Companion is to provide SMG Advisors with an effective desk reference for understanding and navigating the SMG Program, its online Teacher Support Center, and its online team trading portfolio.  It contains many great handouts so take a few minutes to look through this new publication.

Kansas Standards Update!

By the end of September the Stock Market Game online lessons should be correlated to the Kansas Educational Standards in the following areas:

  • Business
  • Economics
  • Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Technology

We are very excited to have this project so close to completion.  In fact, you will already find the Math, Social Studies & Language Arts completed. These lessons have been correlated to national standards but we think adding the state correlations will be an additional benefit to teachers and also show administrators added value of using the SMG.

InvestWrite is Back!

Don’t forget to pre-register your class for the InvestWrite Essay Competition.  The Fall competition will be open from October 10th to November 30th. InvestWrite is a tool that enhances the The Stock Market Game™ program by providing your students with a way to demonstrate what they are learning in the classroom and awards them for their hard work.

InvestWrite fosters:

  • Achievement in academic areas such as mathematics, language arts, social studies, economics, and finance
  • "Real life” decision-making skills
  • An understanding of the need to save and invest

InvestWrite gives an opportunity:

  • To incorporate The Stock Market Game program knowledge into your curriculum
  • To add writing/critical thinking to the program without extra planning time
  • To step aside from the daily school routine for students as well as for teachers
  • To learn more about the stock market and investing
  • To enrich yours and your students’ Stock Market Game experience
  • To win great awards for everyone
  • To compete as individuals with other students at their grade level all over the country

Each teacher using the SMG was allowed to submit five entries to be considered.  Independent, volunteer judges drawn from industry, education and local communities then chose winners from the final essays submitted by the teachers.
